One on One Basketball announces the fifth annual Harriet Novarr Scholarship to be awarded to a 12th grade varsity female basketball player. Harriet was a long time member of the One on One family who helped pioneer the women's game. Harriet played college basketball at Syracuse University before women were offered scholarships. After two years, Harriet left Syracuse to pursue a professional career in Europe. When the first women's professional league in the United States started, Harriet quickly returned to be an original member. When the league folded, she returned to Europe to play for several more years. Whether playing in a pick up game, teaching kids at a youth clinic, or keeping score at a WMBL game, Harriet always had a smile on her face. Her love and passion for the game were unmatched. Her strength and courage through her difficult struggle with cancer remains an inspiration to all who knew her.

In honor of Harriet, One on One Basketball will be awarding a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior. The money is to be used for college expenses. Each scholarship applicant must write an essay on "What Basketball Means to Me". The interpretation of the title is left up to each applicant. Whether writing about a specific play, game or season each applicant should convey what she has learned from basketball and why the sport has been an important part of her life. The essay should not be more than 500 words and will be judged on overall content. All essays are due by August 10th. A panel of judges will read the essays and the winner will be announced September 7th. The winning essay will be posted on the One on One Basketball website.

Rebecca is now attending Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Her tremendous work ethic has guided her to visable success on and off the basketball court. She played varsity basketball for all four years at her high school. She also played on two AAU teams. Congradulations Rebecca!

[2007] Devin Regis view essay »

Devin grew up in San Diego, California and attended Torrey Pines High School where she played 3 years of varsity basketball and 1 year on the junior varsity team. During Devin's sophomore and junior year she contributed to her team's consecutive appearances in the CIF semi-finals. She was elected Co-Captain her Senior year and, despite tearing her ACL midway through the season, still managed to remain an active part of her team. Devin is now attending the University of California, Berkeley where she hopes to study Business.

Montana is now attending the University of Virginia, and she is thinking about majoring in chemistry or history. Last year she graduated from Walt Whitman High School, where she played four years of basketball, three on the varsity squad and one on junior varsity. During her junior year, her team ended its season with a 21-5 record and a trip to the Regional Finals. She enjoys college, but misses her teammates. Congratulations to Montana!

Kristina is attending the University of the South at Sewanee in Tennessee and is currently playing varsity basketball there. Kristina graduated this past Spring from the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart where she was a four year varsity team member and was awarded the 2005 sportsmanship award from her school. Kristina is a 6'2" forward and looks forward to four great years at the University of the South both on and off the court. Congratulations to Kristina!

lise is attending Vassar University and plans on playing basketball there. Although basketball accomplishments are not part of the application process, Elise has an impressive resume. She graduated this past Spring from Georgetown Day School where she was a four year varsity team member and outstanding student. In her senior year she was the leading scorer in Division A of the Independent School League helping her team to a conference championship while also being named team MVP. Congratulations to Elise!
